Broadband Acceleration Conference
February 9, 2011 | 11:00 AM ET | Washington, DC

The FCC takes another step to further the goal of connecting all parts of America to the digital age by convening leaders from federal, state and local governments, broadband providers, telecommunications carriers, tower companies, equipment suppliers, and utility companies to identify opportunities to remove regulatory and other barriers to broadband buildout. Participants will discuss creative approaches that have been utilized to overcome challenges and foster cooperative, win-win situations in rights-of-way, pole attachment and tower sitings. The conference also will explore how innovative technologies and applications, such as smart grid and intelligent transportation systems, and forward-looking policies, such as "dig once" mandates and leveraging public infrastructure to increase wireless communication capacity, can spur broadband deployment and drive economic growth and job creation.

The National Broadband Plan (Plan) included a recommendation that the FCC issue a Cybersecurity Roadmap to identify the five most critical cybersecurity threats to the communications infrastructure and its end-users, and develop a plan to address those threats. This workshop will help facilitate input from panelists and the public about what should be included in the cybersecurity roadmap.

The National Broadband Plan recommended that the Commission hold a "staff workshop to discuss the analytical framework the FCC should use to assess the effectiveness of its existing special access rules." Pursuant to that recommendation, the July 19, 2010 workshop will initiate an evaluation of the analytical framework proposals raised in the record and any associated data collection that would be required to implement such proposals.

One of the goals of the National Broadband Plan is to evaluate the reallocation of spectrum from the broadcast television bands, including rule-makings regarding service areas, distance separations, channel-sharing, and other mechanisms to achieve its spectrum reallocation goals. In support of such future rule-makings, the FCC has invited a number of broadcast industry engineers and technical experts in related fields to convene in four working sessions intended to address certain technical challenges and opportunities facing the broadcast industry today.

Workshop on Availability Gap Technical Paper
